While the $221 billion software and services market is soaring on
ever-increasing demand for new software, a quiet crisis looms.
Studies have shown that almost 40% of this market's revenues could
be classified as waste. Eighty-one billion dollars in waste is an
astonishing figure, and it is expanding. That $81 billion sinkhole
can be traced directly to the study's finding that 31% of all software
projects are canceled before completion.
But there is even more waste that is more difficult to calculate.
Of the 69% of software projects not canceled outright, 70% fail
to deliver expected features, 53% will exceed budget by 189%, and
21% will exceed budget by more than 1000%. A typical project can
be expected to exceed budget by 189% and overshoot its schedule
by 222%, while delivering only three-fourths of the promised functionality.
